The aim of this page is to create a comprehensive resource of links that stem from this site’s published and forthcoming articles. Clicking the respective title field will list all those currently published, with a 404 if there’s nothing. It’s a work in progress and looking a little busy, but I’ve written a cleaner/improved version that’s in beta.

Fight For Your Rights

They Work for You
For all its faults and foibles, our democracy is a profound gift from previous generations. Yet most people don’t know the name of their MP, nor their constituency, let alone what their MP does or says in their name. We aim to help bridge this growing democratic disconnect, in the belief that there is little wrong with Parliament that a healthy mixture of transparency and public engagement won’t fix.

NO2ID
NO2ID is a campaigning organisation. We are a single-issue group focussed on the threat to liberty and privacy posed by the rapid growth of the database state, of which “ID cards” are the most visible part. We are entirely independent. We do not endorse any party, nor campaign on any other topic. We aim to publicise the case against state identity management among the general public, in the media, and at every level in government. NO2ID’s members are from all sorts of backgrounds and hold all sorts of opinions on other questions. They almost certainly include people much like you.

The F-Word
Contemporary UK Feminism. “This webzine exists to help encourage a new sense of community among UK feminists, and to show the doubters that feminism still exists here, today, now – and is as relevant to the lives of the younger generation as it was to those in the 60s and 70s. The webzine was founded by, and is mainly written by younger feminists, those of us born during or after the feminism of the 60s and 70s. Although we encourage contributions from feminists of all ages, we are particularly keen to encourage and showcase the new voices of younger feminists, our peers. To this end, contributions from new writers of all ages, and young women and girls are particularly welcomed and encouraged.”

Iran Human Rights Documentation Centre (eng & Farsi)
The Iran Human Rights Documentation Centre (IHRDC) believes that the development of an accountability movement and a culture of human rights in Iran are crucial to the long-term peace and security of the country and the Middle East region. As numerous examples have illustrated, the removal of an authoritarian regime does not necessarily lead to an improved human rights situation if institutions and civil society are weak, or if a culture of human rights and democratic governance has not been cultivated. By providing Iranians with comprehensive human rights reports, data about past and present human rights violations and information about international human rights standards, particularly the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the IHRDC programs will strengthen Iranians’ ability to demand accountability, reform public institutions, and promote transparency and respect for human rights. Encouraging a culture of human rights within Iranian society as a whole will allow political and legal reforms to have real and lasting weight.

Country Profiles (a.k.a. Where in the world is that?)

An initial introduction from your host.
While one should always be mindful to retain a healthy suspicion/cynicism, and always acquire as many sources as possible, the links provided below that emanate directly from governments, should be viewed with extra caution. Hidden agendas regarding the public perception of certain nations exist, therefore such sites ought to be a perfect repository for such regular, if subtle, deformations of character.

Country Profiles via BBC
Full profiles provide an instant guide to history, politics and economic background of countries and territories, and background on key institutions. They also include audio and video clips from BBC archives.

List of sovereign states via Wikipedia
This is a list of sovereign states, containing 203 entries, giving an overview of states around the world with information on the status and recognition of their sovereignty. For the sake of clarity, it is divided into two parts. The first part lists all 193 widely recognised sovereign states, including all member states of the United Nations and Vatican City. The second part lists states which are de facto sovereign, but which are not widely recognised by other states. Both parts are arranged alphabetically.

Countries via World Health Organization
members of WHO by accepting its Constitution. Other countries may be admitted as members when their application has been approved by a simple majority vote of the World Health Assembly. Territories which are not responsible for the conduct of their international relations may be admitted as Associate Members upon application made on their behalf by the Member or other authority responsible for their international relations. Members of WHO are grouped according to regional distribution (193 Member States).

Country profiles via UK Government Foreign & Commonwealth Office
We have knowledgeable experts who keep detailed profiles of every country worldwide. In this section of the website, you’ll find summaries of these detailed country profiles. For each country, we give headline facts and figures about the population, capital city, currency and so on. Then briefly outline the geography and recent history, current politics and economic trends, and the country’s commercial and political relations with the UK.

The World Factbook via CIA
The World Factbook provides information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 266 world entities. Our Reference tab includes: maps of the major world regions, as well as Flags of the World, a Physical Map of the World, a Political Map of the World, and a Standard Time Zones of the World map.

Countries via Yahoo! Directory
Less formal. Covering many sub-topics such as cities and towns with their respective local business, shopping and entertainment. A different approach than the links above, though appears to me, perhaps not to have been updated in certain areas, but this opinion was gained from a brief overview, it might nevertheless prove a useful addition to the previous, considered ‘official’, sources

World Wildlife Fund
WWF-UK is the UK arm of the WWF Network, the world’s leading environmental organisation founded in 1961 and now active in over 100 countries.

The Bill Hicks Foundation for Wildlife
Our philosophy is that wild animals were here first, and the least we can do, for invading and destroying their natural habitat, is to give a little something back by helping those we can. Often, this “little something” means volunteers putting in many selfless hours; giving up nights, weekends, and any pretence at a “normal” life; and spending their own money on medical expenses, supplies and food. Donations help, but they just don’t put a dent into the expenses incurred.

Not A Crime flickr group
“Police in the UK and abroad routinely invoke bogus anti-terror legislation to prevent photographers from carrying out their work, and photojournalists are constantly filmed at gatherings and their details kept on an ever-growing database. There is no point petitioning governments, because they’re not listening, and the problem is generally that laws are being misused, rather than drafted, to harass photographers. Over the next year, we hope to gather thousands of self-portraits of photographers – professional and amateur – from around the world, each holding up a white card with the words: ‘Not a crime’ or ‘I am not a terrorist.”
